A Bit Like A Tree — Dance Workshop

Aug 10th 2023 , 11:00 15:00

Workshop for dancers and everybody who likes to move with:

Cary Shiu, Katye Coe and Roni Katz

Thursday 10.8, 11:00-15:00, including time for a shared lunch

Free of charge

“A bit like a tree” is a workshop that explores the relationship between the inside and the outside. Together and solo we will flow and play between the studio and the outdoors while encountering the multitudes of sentient beings around and among us. What kind of dances emerge through reorienting with other-than-human rhythms, durations, beingness, and inhabitations? How can we dance inside the studio what we experience and sense when we venture into the outdoors? How can multiple correlations help us reimagine through and with queer choreographic frameworks?

Both inside and outside the studio we will experiment with scores of perception, attentions and empathy. We will collect textures, sensations and relationalities and let them deep into our bodies and our dancing. The other-than-human environment will provide us with an abundant substratum for nurturing, getting inspired and challenging each other’s dancing bodies. In exchange we will expand our awareness and listen, and ask what of ourselves can we offer that which is everything.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothes and sneakers that you are happy to be on the ground in. Depending on the weather you might need something for the rain, sunscreen, a hat. A notebook is always good to have. We would like to share a meal together so if it’s possible for you please bring a dish to share.

For registration and questions please send an email to Saskia:

All bodies are welcome. Lake Studios are a Wheelchair accessible space. If you have access needs, please also get in touch with us.

The preparation for the workshop took place in the frame of the project “Planetary Practices” by Roni Katz, supported by Fonds Darstellende Künste with funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media within the program NEUSTART KULTUR

Bios

Born in Hong Kong, living in Berlin since 2019, Cary Shiu works as a freelance dancer performer. In recent years, he collaborated with Roni Katz, Felix Ruckert, Suet-Wa Tam, Lee Meir, Moritz Majce, Zufit Simon, Instant Pig // Stuttgart and more. He graduated from the MA SODA course (Solo/Dance/Authorship) at HZT/UdK Berlin in 2022, and received dance training in La Manufacture, Switzerland.

Katye Coe is a dancer, performer, curator, teacher and mentor based in the UK. Her professional practice spans 20 years and she now works freelance but in association with key institutions including Sadlers Wells, Coventry University, Siobhan Davies Dance, Dance4 and Culture Hub Birmingham.

Roni Katz’s choreographic work engages with the erotic, questions power, and moves through ecological forms. While consistently embodying personal-political matters, these elements shapeshift between formats of cabaret, film, performance, conversation and participation. Both collectively and solo, the work is driven by the necessity and desire to be in community, with and in relation to other human and other-than-human collaborators. The practice, slow and steady, brings into play exposure, subjectivities, sensuality, intimacy and pleasure.
