SUBMERGE 2025 — Yuni Chung / Chōri Collective

LAB: 11 – 12 August | 10-16h

VIDEO INSTALLATION: 11 – 17 August | Ongoing

Chōri Collective is a collaborative platform for Asian artists exploring how we can ferment colonial rhythms inscribed in our bodies, using the culinary metaphors and interaction with non-human performers. Unlike Yōri (요리/料理), which emphasizes crafting refined final dishes, Chōri values the transformative and ongoing processes of cooking.

CHŌRI DANCE
LAB: 11 – 12 AUGUST | 10-16H

The collective reimagines bodies as ingredients and examines power structures as recipes. Here, we aim to mix, contaminate, break, knead, decompose, and ferment the colonial rhythm. Fermented foods from Asia utilize the process of osmosis, a wavering of boundaries where different bodies meet to create balance. Between the white cube and the black box, space and time, human and non-human, what kind of rhythm do we create together?

VIDEO: 11 – 17 AUGUST | ONGOING INSTALLATION

In Chōri Dance, artists from various Asian countries symbolically use ‘Asian cuisine’ to explore the characteristics of Asian bodies, discovering where individual narratives intersect. Each artist selects and embodies a cooking ingredient reflective of their personal and national histories, raising the question: how can different ingredients retain their unique flavors? Through performance, video, and sound, Chōri Dance interweaves identities, opening a dynamic space for shared experiences and dialogue. Framed by culinary metaphors, the piece acts as a critical and lively archive of ongoing collaborations.
