Nellie Gossen (they/them) is an interdisciplinary artist based between the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh first nations, and Berlin. Working through the media of fashion, costume, textiles and performance, Nellie uses clothing as a tool to think and feel through social systems. With an interest in repurposing the materials, rhythms and choreographies of the mainstream fashion industry, Nellie practices fashion as a space of study, ceremony, and as a performance making modality in its own right.
Alongside this, Nellie has a parallel practice as a Death Doula. Through their project Garments for Sacred Passages, Nellie works with both individuals and communities to explore collaborative clothing making as a tool to support, accompany and honor the body as it moves through change.
Nellie’s work has been presented by The Dance Centre (Vancouver), the PuSh Festival (Vancouver), the Icelandic Textile Centre (Blonduos) and Kunsthalle am Hamburgerplatz (Berlin). Nellie holds degrees in Fashion Design (Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee) and Religious Studies (University of British Columbia), and is professionally trained as a Death Doula.
