Katharina Schmelting / Cutterfly

Katharina Schmelting, born in 1992, lives in Berlin and is a freelance theatre professional. As a trained designer, she discovered theatre during her studies and has since been involved in independent theatre and performance projects, as well as staging her own theatre productions. As a versatile, creative spirit, she enjoys constantly discovering and realising collaborative projects. She likes to develop projects holistically and works across the board, from conception to production to artistic and technical implementation. She is particularly interested in mask, puppet and shadow theatre, as well as light as a design element. In Venice, Italy, she received a scholarship to learn the art of mask making using two different techniques: that of the ‘Commedia de’ll arte’ leather masks for acting, with the well-known ‘Sartori’ family in Abano Terme, and that of papier-mâché carnival masks with the Venetian mask maker Gualtiero Dall’Osto.  She would like to apply the knowledge she acquired there here and combine it with contemporary, multimedia, performative media. Currently she is working on her new Project, an experimental Shadow-Mask-Theaterplay about consciousness.
