What if the body does not end at the skin?
What if, instead of understanding ourselves as autonomous individuals moving through an external environment, we approached the body as a confluence—a temporary meeting place of waters, minerals, microorganisms, ancestors, memories, forces and relations?
Confluence is a three-hour embodied laboratory exploring the body as a site of ecological, ancestral and material entanglement. Continuing the research of On How to Be Nature and To Critter, the workshop moves away from the dominant capitalist narrative of the human as an individual entity separated from “Nature” and toward other possibilities for understanding and belonging to the living entangled world.
Through movement, somatic attention, imagination, collective reflection and encounters with material elements, we will bring different bodies of knowledge into conversation: Andean Indigenous worldviews and their understandings of the body as territory, in reciprocity and relational existence; Indian philosophical approaches to embodiment, matter and consciousness; and perspectives from particle physics that destabilize the image of matter as solid, isolated and self-contained.
These perspectives are not presented as equivalent systems or collapsed into a single universal truth. Instead, they become different waters entering the same confluence, distinct ways of troubling the idea of the bounded, autonomous human.
The workshop proposes embodiment as a practice for remembering this entanglement through the sensing, moving, porous body. Bodies made through relations, inheritances and exchanges; bodies continuously passing into soil, air, water, plants, microorganisms and other beings.
We will move between sensing and thinking, individual exploration and collective composition.
No previous dance or movement experience is required.
